With a number of successes under its belt, the AFHA embarked on a new mission in 2004 at the request of Nork Marash’s Dr. Hrair Hovaguimian: to create a new cardiovascular unit in Goris, Syunik.

Goris is difficult to reach from Yerevan (4+hours driving across mountain roads that are snow-covered in winter) and has no facilities to treat heart disease. However, when a heart attack strikes, victims need help fast; making a local solution for Goris necessary.
Goris, distant, but determianant

Located 250 km south-east of yerevan, Goris is a major urban centre nestled in the Zangezur mountains. Life in Goris is difficult-harsh winters, geographic isolation, and scars from Armeno-Azeri war…Indeed, the population of Syunik region paid a heavy price during the Karabagh war; Goris lies on the sole road linking the young Armenian republic to Karabagh-itself historically Armenian-as well as Iranian.
Goris has played a determinant role in the survival of the country over the last two decades, allowing vital exchanges to take place during a period where two of Armenia’s for neighbors continue to block the border.

Syunik, “Southern gateway of Armenia”

The governor Souren Khatchadourian introduced his province as “the southern gateway of Armenia, and the largest region in the country, making up 15% of the territory (4505 km2), with 109 communes and 135.000 inhabitants, 106.000 of whom live at high altitude or on the borders. Goris has a population of 23.216. The province of Syunik has a strategic value for Armenia, and during the conflict with Karabagh, Goris played an important role, linking not only the north to the south, but also to Karabagh. For us, the region was not only essential for the survival of Karabagh, but also for Armenia itself. The mountains and the 250 km that separate us from Yerevan are indicative of the scale of problems we face.”
